Here's a super rarity! The first airing of Prince Planet with Steve Hart on WSNS TV-44!

The early Japanese anime show Prince Planet was the cartoon that Steve hosted before he found his niche with Popeye, beginning some 7 months later (you can see the 5th airing of that show, in its entirety, here: https://youtu.be/KpJGnXKlr6E )

Previous to this date, Prince Planet aired on WSNS without a host.

On this day the episode shown was entitled "The Earth Zero Hour".

Featuring Steve Hart with Little K, Hector the chicken, Mrs. O'Leary the cow and Babbitt the Rabbit (who appears to be having a fit) at "Little K's Fantasy Farm".

Trivia note: Mrs. O'Leary the cow was played by none other than Steve Hart's mother, Lillian Hart. Nancy Boyle did the voice of Hector the Chicken.

Prince Planet (which takes place on the planet Radion, capitol Radion City) was produced in Japan in 1965 and syndicated to the U.S. the next year. The fact that all 52 episodes were black-and-white limited its prospects for airing on local stations, with WSNS one of the few to do so.

To tune of "It's a Small World," Steve, Little K, Hector and Mrs. O'Leary the Cow at the piano (banging out "Spoonful of Sugar") welcome viewers to the show. Steve then visits Hector the Chicken and finds out that he is counting his eggs. Finally Babbitt the Rabbit makes his only appearance to let Steve know that it's time to show the cartoon (and possibly that he had too much coffee)

At the fantasy farm, Little K accuses Hector the Chicken of biting his thumb, which leads into Steve and Little K performing a rousing rendition of "Thumbelina" with accompaniment by Mrs. O'Leary the Cow on piano (Steve introduces the conclusion of Prince Planet - is it possible this segment was aired out of order? That would explain the "goodbye segment" before the conclusion rather than after)

Promo for the sports lineup on WSNS Channel 44, which billed itself back then as "Chicago's Television Sports Center." The week's schedule spotlighted here is: Boxing from the Forum on Mondays, Bob Luce Wrestling on Tuesdays, Boxing from the Olympic on Wednesdays, Championship Bowling on Thursdays, Chicago Wrestling on Fridays, and Outdoor Sportsman on Sundays at 3:30pm (I assume this was the show that later moved to WCIU Channel 26) Also mentions Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cougars road games, and Indiana and Purdue basketball. Steve, Little K and Hector say goodbye by singing another song which then leads into the opening "It's a Small World" tune being replayed (note when the camera pulls out all the way you can see Mrs. O'Leary the Cow (Lillian Hart) with her mask off. :-)

This aired on local Chicago TV on Monday, March 4th 1974 during the 4:30pm to 5:00pm timeframe.
