Here's a complete edition of the public TV series "The Toy That Grew Up" from WTTW Channel 11, with silent films introduced by longtime station announcer Don Ferris (in one of his rarer on-camera appearances).
No it wasn't a kid's show - "The Toy that Grew Up" documented movies from the early years of the industry, as it grew and matured from a nickelodeon sideshow plaything to a viable medium, in the years before sound arrived.
The show ran on WTTW from August 22nd 1962 to December 8th 1971. Other PBS stations aired the show for a few years after 1971.
As always, many thanks to our researcher Chris Tufts for his help in tracking down and verifying the air dates of these shows.
The entire show, not just the film but also Mr. Ferris' intros and outros, is in black-and-white due to this being a film kinescope recording. When originally broadcast we can assume that the studio segments with Mr. Ferris were broadcast in color (or not?). Films were shown with their original title and dialogue cards, and with new musical score by Hal Pearl.
The oldie shown in this edition is "Variety" (1925), starring Emil Jannings as a trapeze artist who discovers his wife is having an affair with another performer.
The film also features Warwick Ward, Kurt Gerron, and Lya De Putti.
The cinematographer, Karl Freund, later worked in that capacity on the trailblazing 1951-57 TV sitcom I Love Lucy, which ran on a host of Chicago TV stations after its 1967 syndication - including WSNS Channel 44 for which Mr. Ferris also announced.

Opening titles, followed by Don introducing the film (which he dates as 1926, the year of U.S. release) and its impact on the German film industry, Mr. Jannings' career and his other film roles, and its plot, before this film (running time about 57 minutes) is shown.
After the movie's end, Don reviews the film's cast, and goes on to Mr. Jannings' career after "Variety," whereby he moved to the U.S. and made films beginning with "The Way of All Flesh" for which he won a Best Actor Oscar for 1927, and continuing on from there, also winning for "The Last Command" (Best Actor Oscar, 1928).
Don then ends the show by welcoming comments and suggestions for future programs over the next several months, and where to send them.
